VGCC Students Attend Mentoring Conference

Vance-Granville Community College’s “Men-on-a-Mission” male mentoring program held a social kick-off on Wednesday, Nov. 12, in the Small Auditorium. Jimmie Ford, a motivational speaker and a North Carolina Community College State Board Member, was the speaker.

Ford, a Wayne County native, retired as associate vice president from Wayne Community College in 2000. A former Wayne County Commissioner and a former member of the North Carolina House of Representatives, Ford is a self-employed motivational speaker. A graduate of Wayne Community College, Ford received a bachelor’s degree from Shaw University and a master’s degree from North Carolina State University. A past chairman of the Wayne County Economic Development Commission, Ford currently serves as chairman of the Goldsboro Enrichment Center. His term on the State Board expires on June 30, 2011.

Ford encouraged students to take advantage of the educational opportunities at Vance-Granville Community College and to “grow where you are planted,” he said.

A reception was held in the student lounge following the meeting.

The “Men-On-A-Mission” Male Mentoring Program, also called M2, is designed to assist first-year ethnically diverse students in acquiring the confidence, resources and skills needed to succeed academically and socially at Vance-Granville. Men-On-A-Mission is open to any male student who attends VGCC, but the emphasis is on minority males in particular. For more information on the mentoring program, contact Daniel Alvarado at (252) 738-3282.
