From the Driver’s Seat to Fleet Leadership: How VGCC Programs Support Careers Across the Trucking Industry

|
News, Program News

As goods move across North Carolina and throughout the nation, the transportation and logistics industry continues to play a critical role in the economy. From commercial truck drivers and dispatchers to fleet managers and business owners, the industry offers a wide range of career opportunities—and Vance-Granville Community College provides multiple pathways for students interested in entering and advancing within the field.

VGCC’s Continuing Education Truck Driver Training program and its curriculum-based Transportation Logistics certificate and Trucking Operations Management degree programs are designed to complement one another, helping students build both the practical skills and business knowledge needed to succeed in today’s transportation industry.

A Growing Industry with Strong Local Demand

According to recent labor market data from Lightcast, transportation and logistics occupations—including heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers—remain among the most in-demand career fields in the Henderson area and surrounding region. Employers continue to seek qualified workers to move products, manage supply chains, coordinate deliveries, and oversee transportation operations.

The demand extends beyond driving positions alone. As trucking companies expand and experienced workers retire, opportunities continue to grow for individuals with skills in logistics, fleet management, transportation planning, and operations.

Starting Behind the Wheel

For many students, the journey begins with VGCC’s Truck Driver Training program. Offered through the College’s Continuing Education division, the program prepares students to earn either a Class A or Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) in a matter of weeks. Students receive classroom instruction, range driving experience, and on-the-road training while learning the safety procedures, regulations, and operational skills required of professional drivers.

Graduates may pursue careers as tractor-trailer drivers, local delivery drivers, dump truck drivers, bus drivers, and other commercial vehicle operators. The program also provides an accessible entry point into an industry where many employers are actively seeking qualified drivers.

Looking Beyond the Cab

While driving skills can open the door to the industry, transportation companies also need professionals who understand how freight moves through the supply chain and how transportation operations are managed. VGCC’s Transportation Logistics certificate introduces students to key concepts such as logistics, transportation systems, and trucking operations. These courses help students develop a broader understanding of how products move from manufacturers to consumers and how transportation networks function behind the scenes.

For students interested in advancing further, the College also offers an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Supply Chain Management with a concentration in Trucking Operations Management. The degree program expands on logistics and transportation concepts while incorporating coursework in business, management, accounting, communications, and supply chain operations. Students gain knowledge in areas such as fleet operations, transportation planning, supervision, customer service, and organizational management.

Both the Transportation Logistics certificate and Trucking Operations Management degree are 100% online, offering students the opportunity to complete classes even when commercial driving takes them away from VGCC’s physical campuses.

Supply Chain Management AAS graduates who want to pursue further education may also qualify for guaranteed transfer admission from Vance-Granville Community College to UNC Greensboro.

Building a Long-Term Career Path

One of the unique advantages of having both programs available at VGCC is the opportunity to combine hands-on industry experience with formal business and management education.

A student might begin by earning a CDL and entering the workforce as a professional driver. After gaining industry experience, that same individual could pursue additional education in transportation logistics and trucking operations management to prepare for supervisory or leadership roles.

The combination can be especially valuable for those who aspire to become dispatchers, transportation coordinators, fleet managers, logistics specialists, safety managers, or even owners of trucking businesses. Understanding both the operational side of driving and the business side of transportation can provide a strong foundation for long-term career growth.

Supporting Workforce Needs Across the Region

The transportation industry affects nearly every sector of the economy, from manufacturing and agriculture to retail and healthcare. As regional employers continue to seek workers with transportation and logistics expertise, VGCC’s programs help create a talent pipeline that supports both local workforce needs and individual career advancement.

Whether students are looking to enter the workforce quickly through CDL training or build toward leadership opportunities through a college credential, Vance-Granville Community College offers pathways that align with multiple stages of a transportation career.

With new classes beginning this August and September, prospective students still have time to explore which path best fits their goals—and how a career that starts behind the wheel can lead to opportunities throughout the transportation and logistics industry.
