The Vance-Granville Community College Foundation has announced the establishment of The Spencer Blalock Memorial Annual Scholarship, created to support a student pursuing a career in the electrical field and to remember the life and aspirations of former VGCC student Spencer Brent Blalock.
Spencer Blalock was born on April 21, 2000, and grew up with a passion for hands-on learning and technical work. After graduating from Roxboro Community School in 2018, he attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte before recognizing his desire for a more applied educational experience. Following in the footsteps of his father Mertis Blalock, a self-employed electrical contractor, Spencer dedicated himself to electrical studies and planned to one day take over the family business.
Spencer enrolled in Vance-Granville Community College, where he earned a certificate in Electrical Systems. He especially enjoyed his classes with instructor Alvin Durham, whom he often assisted in setting up the electrical labs. His time at VGCC played a meaningful role in preparing him for his future career as an electrical contractor.
Beyond the classroom, Spencer was known for his love of basketball and golf—sports he played throughout high school and continued to enjoy whenever he could. He also had a fondness for 2K basketball, fantasy football, and time spent with family and friends.
Honoring a Legacy
Tragically, Spencer passed away in a car accident on March 9, 2025, at just 24 years old. To honor his memory, his parents have established this annual scholarship to support a VGCC student pursuing a certificate or diploma in Electrical Systems.
“We want this scholarship to give another student the opportunity Spencer was working so hard to build for himself,” his parents shared. “He was well on his way to becoming an electrical contractor, and we hope that this award will help someone else achieve their dreams in the electrical field.”
The Spencer Blalock Memorial Annual Scholarship will be awarded to a student enrolled in the Electrical Systems Technology program who demonstrates dedication, strong work ethic, and a commitment to entering the electrical trade.
“The VGCC Foundation is deeply grateful to the Blalock family for their generosity and for choosing to honor Spencer’s life by supporting future generations of skilled electrical professionals,” said Tanya Weary, VGCCF Executive Director.
