BioMADE: The BioIndustrial Manufacturing and Design Ecosystem
Vance-Granville Community College recently joined BioMADE, a non-profit, public-private partnership driving the transformative bioindustrial manufacturing movement in the United States. As one of BioMADE’s newest members, the College joins a network of nearly 300 organizations nationwide, united in their support of bioindustrial manufacturing innovation, education, and collaboration. Other members include leading companies, start-ups, universities, community colleges, and non-profit organizations representing the best and brightest minds working in bioindustrial manufacturing. BioMADE, a Manufacturing Innovation Institute sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense, launched in 2021. The organization is a part of Manufacturing USA.
Vance-Granville is excited to join an organization that brings innovative training solutions needed for a growing biomanufacturing industry. We look forward to working alongside BioMADE and our fellow members to harness the power of biology to create and domestically source the manufactured goods that people use every day.

Biotechnology and BioWork at VGCC
Vance-Granville Community College has a decades-long history of supporting bioindustry in our region. The College launched BioWork in 2001—the first training program of its kind in the state. Since replicated by other colleges, the program was developed by a team that included VGCC, the NC Biotechnology Center, the NC Community College System, and more than a dozen biotechnology companies. This short-term certificate program teaches the foundational skills needed to begin a career as a process technician for a biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or chemical manufacturing company. After just nine weeks, participants are ready for an entry-level process technician job.
As the region’s biotechnology industry expanded, the College recognized the need for more extensive training options. In 2006 VGCC introduced its Bioprocess/Biotechnology curriculum program, providing six-month certificate, one-year diploma, and two-year associate degree credentials.
