On Wednesday, July 29, Vance-Granville Community College’s Medical Assisting program celebrated its Class of 2026 during a pinning ceremony at the VGCC Civic Center in Henderson. Twenty students were recognized during the ceremony, marking an important milestone in their educational and professional journeys.
Dr. Mercedes B. Kamoru, program head, presided over the ceremony. Dr. Angela M. Thomas, Dean of the School of Health Sciences, welcomed the students and their loved ones, faculty, and supporters.
Class president Isabella Dethmers delivered student remarks reflecting on the class’s experiences and accomplishments. Guest speaker Latosha Burch MHA (practice supervisor at Maria Parham Women’s Care) offered words of encouragement as the students prepared for the next chapter of their healthcare journeys.
Three students received special recognition during the ceremony:
- Timothy Snead received the Academic Achievement Award for earning the highest-grade point average during his time in the Medical Assisting program.
- Destiny Jamison-Blackmon received the Growth & Resilience Award in recognition of her strength through adversity, personal growth, and resilience throughout the program.
- Sara Abdulla received the Perseverance & Determination Award in recognition of her unwavering commitment, perseverance, and determination throughout the program.
Dr. Kamoru and Dr. Thomas presented the students with their Medical Assisting pins. Graduates then recited the Medical Assisting Creed of the American Association of Medical Assistants, affirming their commitment to compassion, service, confidentiality, and the ethical principles of the profession.
The program also recognizes Ms. Tonia Randolph, adjunct Medical Assisting instructor, for her instruction, encouragement, and contributions to the students’ success throughout the program.
Dr. Kim Sepich, Vice President of Instruction & Student Services and Chief Academic Officer, delivered the closing remarks, congratulating the students on their accomplishments.
The ceremony celebrated not only the students’ academic achievements but also the dedication, perseverance, and personal growth that carried them through the Medical Assisting program. VGCC congratulates the 20 members of the Medical Assisting Class of 2026 and wishes them continued success throughout their healthcare journeys!
