Employees Honored with Inaugural ‘Live Like Sam’ Award

In April 2024, the Vance-Granville Community College family was shocked and saddened by the passing of longtime employee Sam Jefferson. As the College’s courier, Sam traveled between VGCC’s four campuses and delivered as many warm smiles as he did packages.

As a way to honor Sam’s memory, The VGCC Foundation proudly established the Live Like Sam Award this year. The award celebrates Sam’s legacy by recognizing an employee who exhibits the character he was known for: positive energy, a kind disposition, and a generous spirit.

To find a winner, The Foundation asked Vance-Granville faculty and staff to nominate deserving peers. They totaled the numbers and encountered a surprise: There was a tie. Rather than choose between two worthy nominees, both received the 2024 inaugural Live Like Sam Award. Congratulations to our winners, and thank you for “living like Sam”!

The Foundation plans to bestow its Live Like Sam Award every August during the College’s annual employee convocation.

About The VGCC Foundation:

The VGCC Foundation (VGCCF) offers over 300 endowments for Vance-Granville students, more endowed scholarships than any other program of its kind in North Carolina. In addition to providing scholarships and emergency assistance to deserving students, VGCCF supports a broad range of special community projects.

Numerous individuals, industries, businesses, civic groups, and churches have endowed scholarships, as well as the College’s faculty and staff. Tax-deductible donations to VGCCF have often honored a person, group, business, or industry with a lasting gift to education.
