Vance-Granville Community College will host the first annual VGCC Honor Band for area high school students on Friday, January 27 and Saturday, January 28. Participating band students were nominated by their respective school band directors for their musical talent and passion.

Participants will learn new music especially for this event. Music selections had not yet been finalized at the time of publication, but event organizers offered a preview of what songs attendees might hear: “The Whirlybird March” (John Edmundson), “Cambridge Overture” (Anne McGinty), “Poet and Peasant Overture” (von Suppe/Arr. Conley), and “Gypsy Caravan” (E. Osterling).

The students will meet together for the first time that Friday morning and rehearse all day, reconvening Saturday morning and building to a 3 p.m. concert at the Main Campus Civic Center in Henderson. This concert is open to the public and has no charge for admission. All family, friends, and community members are encouraged to come support these talented students and the schools they represent.

This event was planned by a committee comprised of faculty and staff from VGCC, area band directors, area school administrators, local business owners, and other community members. Brian D. Miller, VGCC music instructor and Community Band director, will serve as conductor for the event. The schools represented include Falls Lake Academy of Creedmoor, J.F. Webb High School of Oxford, and Oxford Preparatory School of Oxford.
