Celebrating National Pharmacy Week and the Next Generation of Pharmacy Technicians
National Pharmacy Week (October 18-24, 2026) provides an opportunity to honor pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy support personnel for their contributions to patient health and medication safety every day. In celebration of National Pharmacy Week, Vance-Granville Community College recognizes the vital role pharmacy professionals play in improving patient care, promoting medication safety, and supporting healthcare teams in communities across North Carolina and beyond.
While a traditional classroom format may pose barriers to working adults hoping to enter this essential profession, VGCC proudly offers its Accelerate Fully Online Pharmacy Technology Program, an innovative workforce training program designed to help students prepare for careers as pharmacy technicians while balancing work, family, and other commitments.
“Pharmacy technicians are an essential part of today’s healthcare workforce,” said Dr. Erica Fleming, Program Head of Pharmacy Technology. “Our program expands access to training for students across our service area while maintaining a strong focus on career readiness, certification, and patient-centered care.”
The fully online format provides students with flexible access to instruction, allowing them to gain the knowledge and skills needed for success in retail, hospital, long-term care, and specialty pharmacy settings. The program combines industry-relevant coursework with experiential learning opportunities that prepare graduates for certification and employment in a rapidly growing healthcare field.
Through the Accelerate program, students can develop competencies in:
- Medication preparation and dispensing procedures
- Pharmacy law and ethics
- Medication safety practices
- Prescription processing
- Inventory and medication management
