VGGC Pins Graduating Nursing Students

Twenty-eight women and men who graduated May 15 from the Associate Degree Nursing program at Vance-Granville Community College received their nursing pins at candlelight ceremonies May 13.

VGCC President Robert A. Miller commended the graduates on their accomplishments and added some facts about the Class of ’99: they ranged in age from 20 to 49 with an average age of 33. Sixteen of the graduates have children, one has six and one has six grandchildren. Twelve of them have other degrees.

Five worked full-time and 14 worked part-time during their nursing school days, and Miller commended the members of Vance-Granville’s 16th ADN class for their hard work and ability to juggle home, work and school.

The 28 graduates are now eligible to take the North Carolina State Board examination in July to become registered nurses.

Class members receiving their nursing pins were: Jana Leigh Grissom, Janice Craven Holland, Angel Overton Maddox and Scotty Thomas Roberson, all of Henderson; Pamela Moss Newhouse of Middleburg; Pamela Michelle Capps of Norlina; Josephine Marie Durham and Janet Wiggs Humphries, both of Manson; Heather Michelle Harris of Macon; Jason Allen Cummins, Suzanne Marie Dunham, Kelli Grissom-Ciferni, Elvin Curtis Hargrove, Cheryl Edwards McCarthey, Beatrice M. Parker, Tiffanie Joan Stark, Melissa Balmer Walthall,

Betty Ann Winston and Beverly Royster, all of Oxford; Nicole Reneé Smoot of Bullock; and Jennifer Dawn Wilkins of Rougemont; Monica Reneé Alston and Jennifer Rowe Joyner, both of Louisburg; Jamie Melissa McKee and Marie Pyle, both of Franklinton; Lisa Ann Amodei of Wake Forest; Mildred Hunt Dean of Roxboro; and William Lee Millard of Durham.

Beth Phillips, nursing program director, explained that the nursing pin is symbolic of having successfully completed an arduous two years of instruction in the nursing art. She and other members of the nursing instructional staff presented pins to the graduates.

Four class members were also honored for academic honors by having maintained grade-point averages of 3.5 or better. They are Pamela Michell Capps, who had the highest average in the class, and Suzanne Marie Dunham, Janice Craven Holland and Pamela Moss Newhouse.

Each graduate wrote a brief description of his or her life and comments about the training period at VGCC. Several took the opportunity to pay special thanks to Katherine Frazier, who retired after the graduation following 27 years of teaching nursing at Vance-Granville. During her tenure, Frazier said she taught more than 650 nurses.
