VGCC recognizes 301 scholarship recipients

Vance-Granville Community College honored 301 students receiving scholarships, as well as the donors and partnering organizations who established those scholarships, at a dinner on Oct. 13 in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus. This was the inaugural event of its kind at VGCC and allowed many students to meet and have dinner with community leaders and supporters of the college’s Endowment Fund.

In her remarks, Dr. Stelfanie Williams, the president of VGCC, noted that the Endowment Fund would soon celebrate its 40th anniversary, and she thanked all the contributors and leaders who have helped to build the fund over those years. She also congratulated the scholarship recipients for demonstrating academic excellence. “We honor your achievements, and we are so pleased that you have an opportunity this evening to fellowship with the donors and representatives of the organizations who have partnered with the college to provide the resources to support your academic endeavors,” Williams said. “The scholarship program demonstrates that a community of support surrounds you, and that is what makes our college such a special place.”

Speaking on behalf of the scholars was Jonathan Carlock of Henderson, who is pursuing a Nursing degree through the new Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses (RIBN) program. He thanked the Endowment Office and the donors for their generous support of VGCC’s diverse student body. “Your contributions are what help a single mother student not have to choose between taking a class she needs and buying her kids their favorite toy,” Carlock said. “They’re what helps that ‘fresh out of high school’ student not compile tons of debt. They’re what helps the older student who’s retired and still wants to continue his or her education. The list goes on and on of different cases in which the money that you contribute helps a student pursue his or her dream. As Vanguards, we are a group of people leading the way, and I’m proud to call you a part of our Vanguard family.”

To represent donors, Malvin Hargrove, manufacturing manager for Glen Raven, Inc. in Norlina, made remarks on behalf of his company, which has endowed numerous scholarships. He noted the important role that the college plays in preparing a skilled technical workforce for employers like Glen Raven, but added that it was also gratifying to support any student with aspirations for a better life, because that benefits the whole community. “We at Glen Raven feel like it’s our civic duty as community leaders to continue our partnership with Vance-Granville Community College,” Hargrove said.

Scholarships of various levels, including 45 Presidential Scholar Awards (the most prestigious endowed scholarships), 62 Presidential Merit Awards, 160 Academic Achievement scholarships and 34 annual (non-endowed) scholarships were awarded to students this academic year, representing $206,623. The scholarships presented to students this year bring the total to more than 8,800 awarded by the college to date.

VGCC scholarships have been endowed by numerous individuals, industries, businesses, civic groups, churches and the college’s faculty and staff. For more information about the Endowment Fund, call (252) 738-3409.
