VGCC Board Honors Past Chair and Approves Budget

The Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees held its regular bimonthly meeting on Monday, September 17 at the college’s Main Campus in Henderson.

This was the first meeting with Deborah F. Brown of Henderson serving as the new chair of the Board of Trustees . She was elected to that office at the Board’s July meeting. The Board honored its former chair, Donald C. Seifert, Sr. of Henderson, with a plaque thanking him for his service to the Board. Seifert had served as Board chair from 2003 through 2012 and continues to serve as a trustee.

Ernest Thompson, chair of the Personnel Committee, reported that all permanent VGCC employees would be receiving a 1.2 percent increase in salary, as approved by state legislators. This will be the first salary increase for employees since July 2008.

At the meeting, the Board voted to approve new appointments to VGCC’s Advisory Committees for the 2012-2013 fiscal year. Advisory committee members are people from the communities served by the college who have worked in the fields that the college trains students to enter. Committees are also established to advise the VGCC campuses in Granville, Franklin and Warren counties, as well as the Small Business Center and other departments. Many committee members are VGCC alumni. Each fall, these committees meet on campus with the heads of the programs they advise.

In other business, the Board voted to approve the 2012-2013 Budget Resolution and Summary of Revenues and Expenditures as presented. The college’s total operating and capital improvement budget for 2012-2013 is $45,939,303.

Also at the meeting, Dr. Rodney Foth, VGCC’s director of planning and research, gave the Board an update on the process through which the college is seeking reaffirmation of its accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Such a reaffirmation is required every ten years of institutions that, like VGCC, have already been accredited by the Atlanta-based agency. An “On-Site Committee” representing the SACS Commission on Colleges is scheduled to visit VGCC on September 24-26 as part of the review process. The ten members of the committee are administrators and faculty members from colleges and universities in Southern states outside of North Carolina.

The next regular meeting of the Board will be held on Monday, November 19 at 7 p.m. in the board room on Main Campus.
