The Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees held its regular bimonthly meeting on Monday, January 23 at the college’s Henderson campus.
The meeting began with Interim President Dr. Angela Ballentine presenting a special award to Student Government Association President and Student Trustee Katina Harris. A College Transfer student from Warrenton, Harris was one of six finalists for the Robert W. Scott Student Leadership Award, a statewide honor presented each year by the NC Association of Community College Presidents. The cash award for $250 was given to Harris for her academic and leadership achievements at VGCC.
Also at the meeting, the Board voted to approve a proclamation authorizing the college administration to begin the process of establishing a campus law enforcement agency. VGCC currently has a security department. The establishment of a campus law enforcement agency would result in a more secure environment for campus visitors, faculty, students, and staff. The Board’s proclamation will be sent forward to the state level to be reviewed by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission for their approval.
The Board voted to approve a mid-year amendment to the 2011-2012 Budget Resolution, which increased the combined budget by $433,082. The College’s total combined amended 2011-2012 budget is now $47,828,413. The Board discussed future plans for building and expansion projects and received an updated Facilities Master Plan report from Angela Crawford Easterday of MBAJ Architecture of Raleigh.
The Board also toured the College’s new Student Learning and Success Center, which was recently completed and is located on the third floor of Building 1. The approximately 9,500-square-foot, newly renovated space incorporates and connects existing college services such as academic advising, counseling, mentoring, career services and tutoring together under one new division, making it easier for students to access the services that they need.
