VGCC Board Approves New Rates for Day Care

Wednesday, May 25, 2011

The Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees held its bimonthly meeting on Monday, May 16 at the college’s Henderson campus.

During that meeting, the Board approved new rates for the college’s Day Care centers. VGCC offers child day care at the Main Campus and the Franklin County Campus. The new rate for one-year-old children will be $565 per month. For all other children (ages two through five years old), the rate will be $535 per month. The new rates will be effective July 1.

In other business, the Board also approved the 2011-2012 meeting calendar. The regular meetings of the Board are held bi-monthly, generally on the third Monday, at 7 p.m. in the Board Room in Building 1 on Main Campus, unless otherwise noted. Committee meetings are held on the same day, beginning at 5 p.m. The 2011-2012 meetings will be held as follows: July 18, 2011; September 19, 2011; November 21, 2011; January 23, 2012; March 19, 2012; and May 21, 2012. The Chair of the Board sets and approves all agenda items that are to be presented to the Board. The Chair must receive agenda items for consideration by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, the week prior to the regularly scheduled meetings. Such requests must include topics for consideration and any documents for presentation.

Also during the meeting, the Board recognized Student Government Association President and Student Trustee Randal Chandler for his service on the Board. Chandler, a College Transfer student from Granville County, joined the Board in November 2010 and has represented student interests at all Board meetings since that time.

VGCC Male Mentoring Program coordinator Rufus Sales was a guest at the meeting and gave Board members an update on the program. Sales said the program has been very successful and now has a page on Facebook and will launch a new Web site soon. Lynwood Roberts of Oxford, a May graduate from the College Transfer program, and Devoan Durham of Henderson, also in the College Transfer program, spoke about their experiences in the male mentoring program. The VGCC Male Mentoring Program is designed to assist male students in acquiring the confidence, resources and skills needed to succeed academically and socially at the college. The program is open to any male student who attends VGCC, but the emphasis is on minority males in particular. Participating students receive support and guidance as they work to develop their own abilities, set goals and progress toward those goals. Students also hear from guest speakers and take part in extracurricular activities promoting leadership and community service.

The next regular meeting of the Board will be held on Monday, July 18 at 7 p.m. in the board room on Main Campus.
