Tuesday, May 19, 2009

The Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees held its bimonthly meeting on Monday, May 18 at the college’s Henderson campus. During that meeting, the Board approved new rates for the Day Care centers. The Board also heard plans for economic stimulus funds and for a 40th anniversary celebration at the college.

During Monday night’s meeting, the Board approved new rates for the Day Care centers. VGCC offers child day care at the Main Campus and the Franklin County Campus. The new rates will be $540 per month for one-year-old children. All other children (ages two through five years old) will be $510 per month. The new rates will be effective July 1.

Vanessa Jones, Vice President of Community and Economic Development, reported to Board members that the college would be receiving economic stimulus funds from the federal government. These will include $200,000 for the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Youth Program; $90,000 for the WIA Adult Work Experience Program; and $250,000 for the JobsNOW Program, which will train workers in 12 selected job fields to be ready for work in six months.

Jo Anna Jones, Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Director of Endowment Program, announced the college’s plans to celebrate its 40th anniversary. The anniversary date for the college is September 4, the date in 1969 on which Vance County Technical Institute was issued its charter. Activities will include student appreciation days on all four campuses during the month of September, a ticketed anniversary dinner and dance on October 3, a public outdoor festival on October 10 and an educational trip to Italy on October 17.

In other business, the Board also approved the 2009-2010 meeting calendar. The regular meetings of the Board are held bi-monthly, on the third Monday, at 7 p.m. in the Board Room in Building 1 on Main Campus, unless otherwise noted. Committee meetings are held on the same day, beginning at 5 p.m. The 2009-2010 meetings will be held as follows: July 20, 2009; September 21, 2009; November 16, 2009; January 25, 2010; March 15, 2010; and May 17, 2010.

During the meeting President Randy Parker recognized the college’s 2009 North Carolina Community College System Academic Excellence Award winners -- Laurie A. Hernandez and Sherry K. Stokes, both of Henderson. Each year, two students from each of the 58 community colleges in the state system receive such an honor. Students are selected based on grade-point-averages, school activities, community/volunteer activities, and for working while attending school. Hernandez and Stokes earned grade-point-averages of 3.95 and 4.0, respectively.

The next regular meeting of the Board will be held on Monday, July 20 at 7 p.m. in the board room on Main Campus.
