Trustees Handle Numerous Items During May Business Meeting

While Dr. Ben F. Currin’s announcement that he will retire as president on Dec. 31 was the most notable event during the May 18 meeting of the Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees (for story, click here), the trustees also handled many items of college business.

David Brooks, chairman of the Building Committee, gave an update on the status of construction of the new Franklin County Campus in Louisburg (latest construction shown in photo at right). Despite delays earlier this year due to extremely wet weather, construction is back on track, and VGCC will conduct Fall Semester classes in Louisburg as scheduled.

The new campus will include a two-story, 28,000 square-foot brick structure containing several classrooms, administrative areas, a laboratory, child care center and conference room. There will also be a 7,500 square-foot facility to house vocational shops to train electrical, heating and air conditioning students, as well as welding and other trades students.

Personnel Actions

The trustees accepted the resignation of Jackie Sutton, program head/instructor of the college’s Cosmetology Program. They also approved employment of: Camille Chandler, instructor/coordinator for the Adult Learning Center at South Campus in Creedmoor; Ronald G. Grady, program head/instructor for Medical Assisting; Suzanne L. Keil, assistant coordinator of Basic Skills; Philip M. White, coordinator of Prison Programs; and Beverly Hudgins and Althea W. Capps, nursing instructors.

Day Care Fees

The trustees approved an increase in VGCC Day Care fees, effective July 1. Fees for full-time toddlers, ages 1-2, will increase from $375 to $390 per month, and rates for older full-time children will rise from $345 to $360 per month. Fees for children receiving part-time care will be prorated and increased according to age and hours of attendance.

Information Items

The trustees also received the following items of information about college operations:

 * Vance-Granville will offer a new Licensed Practical Nursing program in the Butner-Creedmoor area this fall. Classes will be taught primarily at John Umstead Hospital and Murdoch Center, and about 20 students can be accommodated.
 * All Continuing Education programs at the college performed in accordance with the local audit policy for summer term and fall semester 1997 and spring semester 1998.
 * There were no discrepancies noted in the recent compliance survey conducted of VGCC by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
 * The college’s 14th annual Endowment Fund Golf Tournament, held May 12, netted a record-high $19,306 for student scholarships, approximately $3,000 over last year’s event.
