Students must be approved by a Health Sciences Academic & Career Coach to register for this exam.
Notice to Students: Your Academic & Career Coach will notify the Testing Center of your eligibility to take the test. At that time, you will receive an email to your VGCC email account with instructions regarding registration for the RN Fundamentals test.
You MUST use your VGCC email account to register for the test!!
Students are admitted to the LPN to ADN Transition Program in accordance with the policies set by Vance-Granville Community College. Each applicant is required to meet the minimum requirements as set by the college. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission into a program, only an opportunity for consideration.
The RN Fundamentals 2016 Proctored Assessment is the entrance test administered to prospective LPN to ADN Transition Program students that currently maintain a license as a Practical Nurse. A score of Level 2 or higher is required to be considered for admission into the program. The Fundamentals exam may only be taken once and is administered at the Main Campus.
The RN Fundamentals is only administered at the VGCC Main Campus Testing Center.

WHAT IS THE RN FUNDAMENTALS 2016 TEST?

This 70-item test offers an assessment of basic comprehension and mastery of fundamental principles for nursing practice including:
- Foundations of practice (health care delivery, thinking strategies for nursing practice, communication, professional standards, legal and ethical responsibilities, nursing through the lifespan)
- Basic nursing care (admission, transfer and discharge processes, medication administration and error prevention, safety, ergonomic principles, asepsis and infection control, comfort, basic needs, wound care)
- Support of psychosocial needs (therapeutic communication, coping, family, cultural and spiritual health, end-of-life care)
- Support of physiologic needs (oxygenation, circulatory, fluid and electrolytes, acid-base balance, elimination, neurosensory, mobility)
- Health assessment (assessment of vital signs, general and system specific assessments, risk reduction)
You have 70 minutes to complete the assessment.
IS THERE A FEE FOR THE TEST?
YES. The fee is $33. Test fees must be paid in advance.
HOW DO I PREPARE FOR THE TEST?
Two practice exams are available online at www.atitesting.com. Go to the Online Store and select either RN Fundamentals Online Practice 2016 A or B. Practice exams are $40.00 each. Once you complete the Practice Exam, go to My Results to complete a Focused Review to prepare for the proctored exam. Students are strongly encouraged to take a practice exam and complete the Focused Review prior to taking the proctored exam.
The Fundamentals of Nursing Review Module - Edition 9.0 - 2016 is also available in the ATI online store for $49.00.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO COMPLETE THE RN FUNDAMENTALS 2016 TEST?
You will have 70 minutes to complete the assessment.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME ON TEST DAY?
You must bring with you an official picture ID. (Examples: driver's license, passport, or high school picture ID).
You must also bring your ATI account log-in information. You must create an account with ATI prior to your test date in order to take the test. There will not be time to create the account on the day of the test. CHECK YOUR USERNAME AND PASSWORD BEFORE THE TEST DAY!
Paper and pencil will be provided.
Calculators are NOT allowed.
No food, drinks, tobacco products, cell phones, smart watches, beepers, pagers, or children are allowed in the Testing Center.
WHAT DO I DO IF I FORGOT MY USERNAME AND PASSWORD?

WHEN WILL I GET MY TEST RESULTS?
A Test Administrator will provide you with a copy of your test results immediately upon completion of the exam. An Academic & Career Coach will be available to discuss your test results.
HOW MANY TIMES CAN I TAKE THE RN FUNDAMENTALS?
1 TIME. Students are only allowed to take the test once. If you have previously taken the STEP test or an earlier version of the LPN to ADN Transition Program entrance exam, you are NOT eligible to take the RN Fundamentals.
HOW DO I REQUEST SPECIAL TESTING ACCOMODATIONS?
Students that need special testing accommodations may contact the Disabilities Counselor/Advisor located in Building 8 on the Main Campus in Henderson, NC (examples: extended time, a reader, or interpreter). Disability Services will determine the best accommodations to meet your testing needs.
WHAT IF I EXPERIENCE TEST ANXIETY?
Anxiety is common for most test takers. Stress can make the body more alert, consequently improving your performance. For some individuals, stress can be a hindrance and can result in a decrease in concentration. In order to minimize stress while taking a test, please consider the following things:
- Get plenty of rest the night before taking a test.
- Eat a well-balanced breakfast or lunch.
- Arrive 10-15 minutes prior to testing in order to collect your thoughts.
- Don't drink too much caffeine. Caffeine can increase your excitability.
- Think positive! Do not begin testing with negative thoughts. You will do well.
