Widespread Interest Shown In Presidency Position At VGCC

More than 80 people have requested applications for the presidency of Vance-Granville Community College.

That was the word from Donald Seifert, chairman of the Presidential Search Committee of the college’s Board of Trustees, speaking to the trustees at their bi-monthly meeting Monday, July 20.

The college is looking for a replacement for Dr. Ben F. Currin, who will retire Dec. 31 after almost 18 years at Vance-Granville’s helm and 40 years in education.

Advertisements for the position have been placed in area and state newspapers, national education periodicals, and announced through the North Carolina Department of Community Colleges to all 59 colleges in the system. About half the inquiries so far have come from out of state, Seifert said. “Many came from California, Washington state, Wyoming, all over the country,” he said.

After more completed applications are received, the committee will begin screening applicants. Deadline for applying is Aug. 17.

The Board of Trustees will submit from three to seven finalists to the state board, which will approve all or some of them and return them to the local board.

The board will make its final selection and send it to the state for final approval. Seifert said it is hoped a new president will be selected in December and begin work Jan. 1, 1999.

Franklin Campus Update

Building Committee Chairman J. David Brooks reported that it will be “tight,” but the college plans to begin Fall Semester classes as scheduled Aug. 24 at its new Franklin Campus in Louisburg. Windows were installed over the past weekend so that interior finish work may be completed and furnishings moved into the facility.

Also, Brooks said $1 million has been added to the N.C. House version of the state budget for the Franklin Campus. If approved, this money will be used to construct the third building in the campus plan and complete the facility as designed.

1998-99 County-Funded Budget Approved

The trustees unanimously approved $1,116,584 current and capital budgets to be funded by the four counties which Vance-Granville serves – Vance, Granville, Warren and Franklin.

Current expense, or operating, funds of $1,008,543 make up the majority of the total. Vance County will provide $586,000 and Granville $195,333, and other local revenue will total $26,700 for the main campus. Granville will also provide $72,917 for the South Campus and library between Butner and Creemoor, Warren County will allocate $49,593 for operation of the satellite in Warrenton, and Franklin will fund $78,000 for the campus in Louisburg.

Capital, or construction and maintenance funding, outlays will be: Vance — $59,908 for Main Campus; Granville — $19,633 for Main Campus and $22,500 for South Campus; Warren — $5,000 for Warren Campus; and Franklin — $2,000 for Franklin Campus.

Local funding represents an increase of $128,312 over 1997-98.

The majority of the college’s total budget of more than $11 million comes from state funds.

Officers Re-Elected

The board unanimously re-elected John T. Church Sr. as chairman for another year, along with Vice Chairman John K. Nelms and Secretary Henrietta H. Clark.

Also, Ninth District Court Judge Daniel F. Finch administered the oath to T.W. Ellis Jr., John M. Foster and Clarence Lemons, all of whom have been reappointed to four-year terms on the board. Ellis was appointed by the Vance County Board of Commissioners, Foster by Gov. James B. Hunt, and Lemons by the Granville County Board of Education.

The board honored Michelle E. Burgess of Vance County, whose term on the board has expired, and it also recognized Danny H. Mangum Jr., student trustee. Mangum, president of the Student Government Association, will graduate in August and attend N.C. State University. At the recommendation of the Personnel Committee and its chairman, T.W. Ellis Jr., the board accepted the resignation of Susan Gibson-MacNeela, clinical coordinator of the Radiology program, and approved the retirement of Janet Ferguson, Office Systems Technology instructor.

The board also approved full-time employment of Denece P. Berry, coordinator of On-The-Job Training; Carolyn Faith Smith-Goff, LPN program head; Julie A. Zulewski, Early Childhood instructor; Charles Alvin Cable, clinical instructor, Radiography; and Laura P. Peace, Computer Extension Program instructor.
