VGCC Women’s Volleyball team completes first season

After winning just two of its first 14 contests, the Vance-Granville Community College women’s volleyball team finished on a more positive note, winning two of its last four matches of the regular season. The team ended its first season in the National Junior College Athletic Association with an official record of 4-12. One Vanguard player, Brandy Driver of Louisburg (pictured above), was nominated by Coach Ellis Crews for NJCAA All-Region honors. Driver, a setter and right-handed outside hitter, previously played for Bunn High School. At 5’7″, Driver averaged seven kills per game and provided 70 percent of the team’s defense, according to Coach Crews. “She was our go-to player,” Crews said.

On Oct. 17, the Vanguards participated in a tri-match at Johnston Community College, losing in the first match to Johnston CC three sets to none, and then defeating Rockingham Community College 3-1 (scores of 25 – 22, 25 – 16, 18 – 25 and 25 – 18). VGCC also beat Rockingham CC on Sept. 12. Next, the VGCC squad continued its travels by visiting Lenoir Community College on Oct. 20. The result was a Vanguard loss to the Lenoir Lancers in three sets, much like the teams’ first meeting on Sept. 30. VGCC visited Central Carolina Community College on Oct. 22, and defeated the Cougars 3 – 1 (scores of 16 – 25, 25 – 13, 25 – 16 and 25 – 16). VGCC improved to 2-0 versus Central Carolina, having shut out the Cougars 3-0 on Oct. 1. The Vanguards closed out the regular season at home with a 0-3 loss to area rival Louisburg College on Oct. 23. That followed a close 3-2 loss to the Hurricanes squad in September at Louisburg.
