VGCC Women’s Volleyball sophomores honored

Two sophomore standouts on the Vance-Granville Community College Vanguards women’s volleyball team were recently recognized with honors by coaches in National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region X, at an awards banquet held in conjunction with the conference tournament. Stormi Abernathy of Leasburg was named to the All-Region Second Team, while Hannah Arneth of Oxford received an Honorable Mention for the All-Region team.

Earlier, the VGCC volleyball program itself paid tribute to the sophomore leaders on Oct. 13, at their last home match of the season, a contest with Louisburg College at Aycock Recreation Center in Henderson. The two second-year players rounding out their VGCC playing careers were also the team’s co-captains this season.

Abernathy is a graduate of Pinetree Christian Academy, while Arneth is a product of J.F. Webb High School of Health and Life Sciences in Oxford.

Though her playing days as a Vanguard are over, Abernathy will continue to study Radiography at VGCC, with plans to graduate in 2019. Arneth, meanwhile, is a College Transfer student and is set to graduate in 2018 with an Associate in Science degree. Then, she plans to transfer to North Carolina State University to major in Math Education.

Over the course of the regular season, Abernathy was the Vanguards’ team leader in kills (171), with Arneth coming in second (83). Abernathy also led the team in assists (196) and solo blocks (15). Freshman Amber Newton was tops in digs (42), but Arneth was close behind (37).

At the conference level, Abernathy ranked first for kills per set (3.98), fifth in total kills and second in hitting percentage. Arneth, meanwhile, ranked eighth in blocks per set for the conference.
