VGCC Will Introduce Genealogy In Class At Granville South Campus

Interested in getting in touch with your roots?

A class coming up this fall at Vance-Granville Community College’s South Campus will help participants do just that. “Introduction to Genealogy” will run from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturdays, beginning Sept. 14 and ending Nov. 2 at the campus on N.C. 56 between Butner and Creedmoor.

Christopher P. Ross, a secondary school and community college instructor who holds degrees from Duke University, UNC-Chapel Hill and Old Dominion University, will teach the course. He describes the course as “designed to facilitate the discovery of one’s own family.”

To do this, Ross will emphasize making the best use of source materials in the Triangle area and in Granville County. “Students will learn to use special collections and court records, and how to interview and correspond with older family members,” he said. They will also learn how to gain access to family records from the Mormon Library, Library of Congress and the New England Historic and Genealogical Library.

Cost of the course is $26.25. To pre-register, call the VGCC Continuing Education office at 252-492-2061, ext. 3316.
