VGCC Vanguards go 2-1 in road series

The Vance-Granville Community College men’s basketball team recently completed a three-game road trip in which the Vanguards faced three conference rivals.

On Jan. 3, the VGCC Vanguards defeated the Wilkes Community College Cougars by a score of 102-90. VGCC head coach Avery Wilson praised the team’s well-balanced scoring effort, which saw six of his players score in double figures: Raymond Dunn of Henderson, who led the team in scoring, followed by Dane Williams of Henderson, Cameron Keith of Youngsville, Bryan Burrell of Raleigh, Mitchell Jeffries of Raleigh and L.C. Hester of Oxford. Hester also led the team in rebounds, with 15. Dunn contributed 11 rebounds.

The Vanguards suffered a setback on Jan. 5 in a tough 84-82 loss to the Rockingham Community College Eagles. The lead went back and forth between the teams, and it all came down to a missed VGCC shot at the buzzer. With 29 points, Raymond Dunn again led the Vanguards in scoring, and he also racked up 13 rebounds. Bryan Burrell scored 23 points.

VGCC turned right around from that close defeat to pull out a close victory two days later. On Jan. 7, the Vanguards defeated the Surry Community College Knights 80-77 in Dobson. After that win, the Vanguards had a 9-4 record for the season, and a 4-2 conference (Region 10, NJCAA Division II) record.

Next, VGCC will finish a busy January schedule with a six-game home stand at Aycock Recreation Complex in Henderson. First, area rival Louisburg College visits VGCC on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 3 p.m. Sandhills CC follows on Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. On Jan. 17 at 3 p.m., Johnston CC will try to avenge its earlier home loss to the Vanguards. Patrick Henry Community College will travel to Henderson for a Jan. 21 meeting at 7 p.m. VGCC will get another crack at Lenoir CC on Jan. 24 at 3 p.m. Finally, the Vanguards will try to even their record with Rockingham CC on Jan. 31 at 3 p.m.
