VGCC Vanguards come up short in first two games

The Vance-Granville Community College men’s basketball team is 0-2 to start the college’s second season as a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

The Vanguards opened the regular season on the road, at Central Carolina Community College in Sanford on Nov. 1. The hard-fought game saw the lead swing back and forth. VGCC had a four-point lead at halftime, but in the end, the Cougars came away with a 79-76 win. Raymond Dunn of Henderson led the Vanguards with 27 points and 15 rebounds. Ric Yarbrough of Franklinton added 14 points, while Trentin Cozart of Oxford contributed ten points and six assists in his first game for VGCC.

The Vanguards next played their home opener versus Southside Virginia Community College at Southern Vance High School on Nov. 11. The result was another back-and-forth affair that ended in a VGCC defeat to the SVCC Force, the reigning Virginia Community College System state champions. The final score was 84-77. Again, Raymond Dunn led the team in scoring, with 16 points. Ryan Belton (14 points) and Ric Yarbrough (11) also scored in double figures.

All other home games, which are free and open to the public, will be played at Aycock Recreation Complex in Henderson. Upcoming home opponents include a rematch with Central Carolina (Saturday, Nov. 14 at 3 p.m.), Sandhills Community College (Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m.), Louisburg College (Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m.), and Wake Technical Community College (Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.).
