VGCC Vanguards 2-5 after one month of play

After starting 0-3, the Vance-Granville Community College men’s basketball team improved its record to 2-5 as the first month of the regular season came to a close. This is the college’s second season as a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

The Vanguards lost to Central Carolina Community College for the second time on Nov. 14. Playing at home, VGCC lost 98-87, following a three-point loss at Central Carolina on Nov. 1 in their regular season opener. VGCC was led in scoring by Ric Yarbrough (32 points), Raymond Dunn (21) and Trentin Cozart (14).

The first win of the season for VGCC came on Nov. 17, when Sandhills Community College visited the Vanguards. With 21 points, Ric Yarbrough led the team to a 94-83 victory over the Flyers. He was just one of five VGCC players in double figures that evening, including Raymond Dunn (19 points), Sam Hilton (18), Trentin Cozart (16) and L.C. Hester (15).

Next, VGCC traveled to Johnston Community College on Nov. 21 and came away with its second consecutive victory. The 100-87 win over the Jaguars was VGCC’s first game against a conference (Region 10, Division II) opponent. Raymond Dunn led the team with 36 points and 15 rebounds.

A Nov. 24 visit by area rival Louisburg College, another member of the conference, proved to be a disappointment for the Vanguards. The Hurricanes won 85-61. Raymond Dunn was again the leading scorer, with 22 points.

On Nov. 30, VGCC traveled to Lexington to take on the Storm of Davidson County Community College. The close game ended in a 90-85 win for DCCC. With 26 points, Ric Yarbrough led all scorers, while Raymond Dunn added 17 points.

VGCC’s upcoming home opponents include Johnston CC on Dec. 9 at 7 p.m., Pitt CC on Dec. 12 at 3:30 p.m. and Lenoir CC on Jan. 6 at 7 p.m. All home games, which are free and open to the public, will be played at Aycock Recreation Complex in Henderson.
