VGCC Trustees Learn Of Scholarship Donation, Pending Approval Of New Curriculum Program

Each year, the Vance-Granville Community College faculty and staff conduct a drive in support of the college scholarship fund, and the Board of Trustees has learned that this year’s drive set a new donor record.

At their bi-monthly meeting Nov. 17, the trustees hosted the co-chairpersons of the 2003 drive and were told that faculty and staff members pledged $19,000 to the Endowment Fund that provides scholarships to deserving VGCC students.

Co-chairs Jo Anna Jones, George Henderson and Larraine Abbott reported the prior high was $15,090 given in 2000, and they set a goal of  “16,000 more before 2004.” Utilizing some innovative new procedures and incentives this year, faculty and staff far surpassed the old record and the goal, Jones told the trustees.

Responding to the report, Board Chairman Donald C. Seifert Sr. said, “This speaks volumes about the people who see our students every day, who see the impact that scholarships have on the students and on their lives. Your response in this drive is something we’re particularly proud of.”

Many VGCC faculty/staff donors chose to target their contributions to existing scholarships. More than $5,600 was designated for scholarships honoring Pat Graham, the president’s secretary, and Frank Madigan, retired Dean of  Students, and in memory of instructors Vesta Manning, Julius Frazier and Tom Long.

New Programs

Miller said that approval of a new Pharmacy Technology curriculum program is expected to be received any day from the State Board of Community Colleges. If approval is received as expected, Vance-Granville will begin offering this program in Spring Semester 2004, which begins Jan. 7.

Pharmacy Technology will train students to assist registered pharmacists in packaging and labeling medication doses, preparing solutions and intravenous additives, maintaining inventories, and assisting in clerical duties related to the operation of pharmacies, laboratories, wholesale drug companies, and pharmacy-related industries. This will be a one-year diploma program.

The president also said the college is beginning a feasibility study on beginning a Bioprocess Manufacturing Technology two-year degree curriculum program. VGCC is currently offering the 128-hour BioWork Process Technician Occupational Extension class at VGCC’s Franklin County Campus Biotechnology Center.

Promotions, Retirements

VGCC President Robert A. Miller informed the trustees that several promotions among staff have been made as a result of openings brought about by retirements.

Veronica L. Young, currently assistant coordinator at the Warren County Campus in Warrenton, will become the campus coordinator and counselor on Jan. 1, 2004. She will replace Nancy Tunstall, who will retire at the end of this year.

To fill Young’s spot, the college named Evelyn L. Hall of Warrenton, currently an instructor in Office Systems Technology, to be assistant coordinator. Hall will also instruct Information Systems classes, which Tunstall has been doing.

Jo Anna F. Jones, currently program head and instructor for Business Administration, will be promoted on Jan. 1 to chairperson of Commerce and Technical Programs. She will replace James E. Hale, who is retiring at the end of the year.

Miller also told the trustees that VGCC Vice President Frederick H. Wilson Jr. has announced his plans to retire in 2004 after 30 years in education. Wilson will remain at the college until late 2004 to allow the college time to choose a replacement and to help with the transition to the new vice president.

The trustees accepted Wilson’s retirement and praised him for his long service to Vance-Granville Community College.

Accreditation, House Sale

Vance-Granville’s associate degree Radiography program has received re-accreditation from the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. President Miller told the trustees the accreditation is for five years, the maximum period approved by the committee.

Radiography training is conducted at the college’s main campus and at its South Campus in Granville County. It is a two-year program that prepares students to use radiation to produce images of the human body. Graduates receive an Associate in Applied Science Degree and are eligible for national certification. They are prepared to work in hospitals, clinics, physicians’ offices, government agencies, medical laboratories and industry.

The trustees also approved the sale of house number 36, constructed by the Carpentry class at Vance-Granville. The minimum bid for the 1,344 square-foot, three-bedroom house is $29,750. A fact sheet and bid sheet are available from the Business Manager’s Office at (252) 492-2061. Bids for House No. 36 will be received until 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 8, in the Business Manager’s Office at VGCC.

Profits from the sale of this house, and all houses constructed by the Carpentry class, are used to support student financial aid at the college.

Co-chairpersons of the Vance-Granville Community College Faculty/Staff Drive for the college scholarship fund present a check for $19,000 to Board of Trustees Chairman Donald C. Seifert Sr. at the trustees’ meeting Nov. 17. This was the largest amount ever raised by the annual faculty/staff drive.
