VGCC Trustees Approve $2.2 M 05-06 Budget For County Support

Vance-Granville Community College’s Board of Trustees approved 2005-2006 County Capital Outlay and Current Expense budgets totaling $2,216,775 to operate the college’s four campuses.

The trustees passed the budget at their bi-monthly meeting March 21, contingent upon approval by the commissioners of the four counties served by VGCC – Vance, Granville, Franklin and Warren.

Current expense funds are used for operation and maintenance of the satellite campuses located in each of the counties. The college is asking for $954,190 from Vance County.

Granville is being asked for $285,023 in current expense funding for the main campus and for $161,116 for the South Campus located between Butner and Creedmoor. This includes $24,620 for operation of the library annex located at South Campus.

Warren County is being asked for $130,331 for current expense funding for the Warren County Campus, and Franklin County is being asked for $234,740 for the campus near Louisburg.

The college is asking Vance County for $13,500 in capital outlay allocation, which pays for equipment and other long-term purchases for the main campus. For their satellite campuses, Granville is being asked for $10,000, Franklin for $15,000 and Warren for $140,000 in capital outlay funds.

In related budget discussions, President Randy Parker told the trustees that the North Carolina Community College System has told individual community colleges to expect cutbacks from the state because of the proposed budget deficit.

Parker said there may be a 1-4 percent permanent budget cut in the college’s state budget. In addition, colleges may not get some of the money expected for student enrollment growth.

Construction Update

Building Committee Chairman David Brooks reported that the new addition to the Student Services building on the main campus is complete and is being occupied by staff from that department. Renovation to the older section of the Student Services building is under way, and completion is expected in mid-April. When this occurs, all Student Services functions will be located in one building for the convenience of students and efficiency of operations.

Foundations and underground utilities work at the 17,000 square-foot, two-story classroom building at the Franklin County Campus has been completed, Brooks said. Structural steel has been erected and roof work has begun, the project is ahead of schedule, and completion is expected by December.

Construction documents for the 20,000 square-foot addition to the South Campus have been re-submitted to the State Construction Office to comply with requirements from that office. Bids for construction of this project are now expected to go out in late April, and the addition should be completed in 12-14 months after construction contracts are approved.
