VGCC To Host Future Educators Symposium

High school and community college students who plan to become teachers and teacher assistants are being invited to attend a Future Educators Symposium at Vance-Granville Community College on Thursday, Sept. 16.

The symposium will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Civic Center on Vance-Granville’ s main campus in Vance County.

Members of the Future Teachers of America in high schools in Vance, Granville, Franklin and Warren counties, as well as college transfer, Teacher Associate and Early Childhood Associate students at Vance-Granville, are being invited to attend.

“There is a shortage of teachers throughout the country, and we are presenting this symposium as a means to get students interested in, and excited about, going into education,” said Jacqueline Heath, program head for Teacher Associate at VGCC.

Kelvin Spragley, associate executive director of the North Carolina Association of Educators, will deliver the keynote address. His topic will be “21st Century Teachers: Are they Different from 20th Century Ones?”

Three breakout sessions will be featured at the symposium. Dr. John Beck, chairman of General College and College Transfer at VGCC, will discuss four-year education programs in “Where You Need to Go to Become a Teacher.”

David Bennett, assistant superintendent for human resources and operations

for Granville County Schools, will speak on “What Employers are Looking for in Teachers and Teacher Assistants.”

Glenda Cook, Academically Intellectually Gifted coordinator for Vance County Schools, will lead a session on “Brainedness,” that will look at which areas of the brain control a person’s actions.

The symposium will provide time for networking, and catalogs and information from colleges and universities in North Carolina will be available for participants. Each participant will receive a Vance-Granville Community College gift bag. There will be door prizes and refreshments, and child care will be provided for those with small children.

Members of the committee who planned the symposium are Gloria Kearney of Franklinton High School, Patricia Neems of South Granville High School, Janita Allen and Blondine Small of J.F. Webb High School, Elaine Webb of Southern Vance High School, Carole Griffin of Northern Vance High School, Diane Rogers of Warren County High School and Jacqueline Heath of VGCC.
