VGCC students stuff stockings for children

The Vance-Granville Community College chapter of the Student North Carolina Association of Educators (SNCAE) recently conducted a service project to bring holiday cheer to local schoolchildren. The club organized Christmas parties on Dec. 11 for exceptional children at L.B. Yancey Elementary and Carver Elementary schools in Henderson. Each child received a stocking full of goodies, seen here being stuffed by (from left) VGCC Dean of Arts and Sciences Dr. Michael Ellis, and students Sandra Hargrove of Norlina, Helen Jenkins of Henderson, Lisa Schronce of Henderson, Gertrude Marrow of Henderson and Arlene Wright of Youngsville. VGCC students also read stories, sang holiday songs and provided refreshments for the children at the parties.

“We wanted to do something special for the special needs children,” Wright, who is secretary of the SNCAE chapter, said. “We don’t want them to be forgotten, especially at this time of year.”

The organization at VGCC is led by president Laurie Hernandez of Henderson and advised by Jacquelin Heath , head of the college’s Teacher Associate program. SNCAE is a pre-professional organization for college students who are preparing for careers in education. VGCC students in education, early childhood or college transfer courses are eligible to join the chapter. SNCAE is a division of the larger North Carolina Association of Educators, the leading professional organization for educators in North Carolina.
