VGCC Students Attend Computer Security Conference

Four students in computer curriculum programs at Vance-Granville Community College attended the fourth annual information security conference organized by the Raleigh Chapter of the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA), on Oct.16 in Raleigh.

Brad Hoelscher, president of the chapter, invited VGCC students John DeRosa of Louisburg, an Information Systems Security graduate and current Web Technologies major; Marc Salmons of Creedmoor, a Networking Technology major; and two Web Technologies students, Monica Turner of Stem and Kathy Wolford of Oxford, to work the registration table during the morning, and then attend the conference sessions. Wendy Bailey, VGCC’s Program Head for Web Technologies, also attended the event.

“This conference is a great opportunity to learn more about information security, talk with companies who provide security products and services and network with fellow information security professionals,” Bailey said. Vendors presented their products and services — everything from intrusion detection and anti-virus solutions to full-fledged security auditing and monitoring software.

“One of the challenges in any technological field is staying current with the latest developments,” said VGCC Dean of Business and Applied Technologies Bobby Van Brunt. “Conferences like these are an invaluable opportunity for students and faculty to see and experience new technology and its applications to real world situations. We feel this is an important part of the educational process and are pleased to make these opportunities available for our students.”
