VGCC Staff member honored by Educational Office Professionals

Mary H. McMannen of Oxford, an Accounting Technician in the Business Office at Vance-Granville Community College, was recently honored by her peers in education. On Oct. 28, McMannen received the Lula M. Burrell Educational Office Professional of the Year award from the North Carolina Association of Educational Office Professionals District 10. The district includes Granville, Vance, Warren, Wake, and Franklin counties. As the district winner, McMannen now advances to the statewide competition along with honorees from the 13 other districts. The state-level winner is set to be announced at the association’s annual conference in March 2012. “I have been actively involved in this organization for many years,” McMannen said. “It is an awesome honor to be recognized by my peers. I am humbled by the whole experience.”

McMannen is not only a veteran employee of VGCC but also a graduate of three different college programs. After earning a GED at VGCC, McMannen enrolled in the college’s Executive Secretarial Science program in the fall of 1978. While pursuing her degree, she worked as a work-study student in the VGCC Financial Aid office. That was the beginning of a career for her, as she was hired to work in the Financial Aid office immediately after her graduation in 1980. Since then, McMannen has worked in various departments related to student affairs, including Admissions and Records. Committed to “lifelong learning,” she has taken VGCC classes on taxes and accounting, and graduated with an Associate in Arts degree in 2001. Subsequently, she became an Accounting Technician in the Business Office. McMannen has served on numerous college committees, including serving as co-chairperson of the VGCC Professional Advisory Committee and as a member of the alumni sub-committee formed in conjunction with the college’s 40th anniversary in 2009. She graduated both from the VGCC Leadership Institute and from Leadership Granville in 2006. McMannen was named VGCC’s Staff Member of the Year in 2009. Also in 2009, she earned her Professional Standards Program (PSP) Certification from NCAEOP.

McMannen is also actively involved in her community, serving as Treasurer of the Oak Grove Baptist Church Missionary Dept., Associate Youth Advisor of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Treasurer of the Granville County Missionary Union, and Associate Youth Advisor of the East Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Association. She is an avid supporter of the United Way and the March of Dimes. “Mary’s dedication and devotion to her family, her work, and her community is very apparent in the contributions that she makes to all three,” said VGCC Controller Kathy Brafford.
