VGCC Selects 11 Ambassadors For 2005-2006 School Year

Vance-Granville Community College has chosen 11 outstanding students to serve as Ambassadors during the 2005-2006 school year.

Ambassadors represent the school at campus events and community functions and assist VGCC personnel in numerous activities.

Representing Vance-Granville during this school year are Ruby Collie of Henderson, an Early Childhood/Teacher Associate student; Michelle Cordova of Wake Forest, Pre-Associate Degree Nursing; April Culbreth of Oxford, Associate Degree Nursing; Marinda Daye of Henderson, Medical Office Administration; Brenda Farnham of Henderson, Office Systems Technology/Legal; Latoya Gooch of Henderson, Business Administration; Theresa Gregory of Oxford, Business Administration and Accounting; Terri T. Jones of Henderson, Early Childhood Associate; Kendall Mangum of Oxford, Criminal Justice Technology; Shalonda C. Young of Warrenton, Early Childhood Associate; and John Williamson of Oxford, Industrial Systems Technology.

To qualify as an Ambassador, a student must have attended VGCC for one year and have achieved a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average. Each nominee undergoes committee interviews.

Ambassadors receive special training through workshops covering leadership, motivation, hospitality and etiquette. In order for them to be helpful and responsive to campus visitors, they receive instruction in college history and college programs and services.

Their duties include serving as guides or hosts and hostesses at events such as graduation, orientation for new students, annual scholarship awards ceremonies, college-sponsored concerts and activities in the Civic Center, and the annual Career Day. The 2005-2006 Ambassadors have already assisted in orientation sessions, summer graduation, Scholarship Day, College Day and Student Appreciation Day.

Ambassadors receive a scholarship and a VGCC blazer for their service to the college.

Daniel Alvarado, Director of Counseling, and Carol Slaughter, executive assistant to the Vice President for Student Services, are advisors to the Ambassadors.
