VGCC Selects 10 Ambassadors For 2004-2005 School Year

Vance-Granville Community College has chosen 10 outstanding students to serve as Ambassadors during the 2004-2005 school year.

Ambassadors represent the school at campus events and community functions and assist VGCC personnel in numerous activities.

Representing Vance-Granville during this school year will be Clint J. Alston of Norlina, an Information Systems student, Elizabeth Ellis Billups of Norlina, a Business Administration major, Lisa Cates, a Medical Assisting student from Henderson, Marinda Davis Daye of Henderson, an Office Systems Technology/Legal student, Linda Daniel Hartsfield of Wake Forest, a Human Services/Substance Abuse student, Connie Talley Jones of Warrenton, an Accounting major, Emma Dunston Jones of Youngsville, an Office Systems Technology student, Robert E. Newhouse of Oxford, a Radiography student, Latoya Sha-Vawn Taylor of Oxford, who is studying Criminal Justice Technology, and Patricia Blair Williams of Franklinton, an Early Childhood student.

Clint Alston is serving as Ambassador for the Warren County Campus, Lisa Cates is the Franklin County Campus Ambassador, and Linda Hartsfield is the Ambassador at South Campus.

To qualify as an Ambassador, a student must have attended VGCC for one year and have achieved a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average. Each nominee undergoes committee interviews.

Ambassadors receive special training through workshops covering leadership, motivation, hospitality and etiquette. In order for them to be helpful and responsive to campus visitors, they receive instruction in college history and college programs and services.

Their duties include serving as guides or hosts and hostesses at events such as graduation, orientation for new students, annual scholarship awards ceremonies, college-sponsored concerts and activities at the Civic Center, and the annual Career Day. The new Ambassadors have already assisted in orientation sessions, summer graduation, 35th Anniversary celebrations and Scholarship Day.

Ambassadors receive a scholarship and a VGCC blazer for their service to the college.

Vanessa R. Jones, dean of Student Development and Advancement Services, and Cindy Jackson, counseling services secretary, are advisors to the Ambassadors.
