VGCC schedules Digital Photography and Software courses at Main Campus

Area residents can register now for short-term courses in photography and two software programs, which will soon be offered by the Occupational Extension Computer Center at Vance-Granville Community College. All three of these courses are scheduled to start in October at VGCC’s Main Campus in Vance County.

Digital Photography & Photo Editing (Level 2)” is set to be held on Monday evenings from 5:30-8:30 p.m., Oct. 29 through Dec. 17. The instructor is Nancy Jo Smith, a Kittrell-based professional photographer who specializes in children and family portraiture. While the course is designed to offer more advanced instruction than Smith’s Level 1 course, all students are welcome.  “During this course, students will expand upon their photography skills, using all manual settings and utilizing off-camera flash,” Smith said. “In addition, basic studio lighting will be covered. Then, using the Photoshop Elements software, students will refine their photo editing skills with special emphasis on portraits.” Smith also incorporates some business and marketing basics for those who wish to expand their hobby into a photography business.

QuickBooks for Beginners,” which trains students to use the powerful accounting software system for small businesses, will be held on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., Oct. 30 through Dec. 11. Instructor Kathy Strickland will teach students about the types of information that businesses need to track and how to enter and track that information in QuickBooks. In addition, students will learn to invoice customers, record payments for customers, pay bills to outside vendors, manage inventory and analyze financial data.

An “Intermediate/Advanced Excel” course is scheduled for Wednesday evenings from 5:30-9:30 p.m., Oct. 31 through Dec. 12. Amy O’Geary, an instructor for VGCC’s Office Administration curriculum program, will teach this class. Designed for students who already have some experience with the Microsoft Excel program, this course will teach advanced spreadsheet formulas and functions. O’Geary said that Excel is used “for storing, organizing and manipulating data” and is “employed in budgeting displays, checkbook registers, enrollment records, inventories, coded surveys, field and laboratory research data, and financial and accounting applications.”

For each course, the registration fee is $65, with other college fees totaling $7.

Registration fees are waived for N.C. resident seniors, ages 65 and above, for one course per semester. For more information and to register for any computer courses, call VGCC at (252) 738-3417 or (252) 738-3324.
