VGCC Offers WorkKeys Assessments To Public On One Day Per Month

Vance-Granville Community College will begin conducting WorkKeys assessments on a monthly basis, beginning Friday, May 20.

WorkKeys is a system designed to describe job skill requirements, measure an individual’s skills, and match people to jobs. The skills measured are skills required in the workplace but do not require job-specific knowledge. Many employers use these assessment scores for hiring and promotion decisions.

WorkKeys assessments are recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor and are EEOC compliant.

Vance-Granville has been conducting WorkKeys assessments for several area companies, including Revlon, Flextronics and Maria Parham Medical Center and local school systems. The need has arisen for individuals to complete these assessments, and the college will conduct them monthly at first, increasing the number of times offered if the response justifies an expansion.

Assessments will initially be offered in Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics, Locating Information, and Writing. Assessments in other skill areas such as Applied Technology, Listening, Observation, and Teamwork will be offered based on demand. Students may take any or all of the assessments offered.

Testing will begin at 8 a.m. on May 20 in Building 7 at the main campus in Vance County.

In addition, VGCC’s Computer Center offers a KeyTrain class that prepares individuals to take the WorkKeys assessment tests. Individualized instruction is offered based on what area of the assessments a person

needs.

KeyTrain will be offered this summer on both the main campus and at the Warren County Campus in day and evening classes. Daytime classes on the main campus will begin May 31 and run from 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays and Wednesdays. Evening classes will begin June 1 and run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., also Mondays and Wednesdays.

Warren Campus KeyTrain day and evening classes will begin as soon as there is enough interest. They are scheduled to be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon. and Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

All KeyTrain classes are open entry and open exit, meaning that students may enter whenever they want and complete the classes at their own pace, leaving when they are finished. The cost of these classes is $60, but they may be free to qualified participants.

The cost of the WorkKeys assessments varies, dependent upon the number of tests an individual needs. They range from $4 for the Applied Mathematics to $16 for writing.
