VGCC Offers Medical Coding Online

The number of computer classes offered online continues to grow at Vance-Granville Community College.

Medical Coding is the latest class that students can take in their spare time in the comfort of their homes or in their offices. Medical coding is one of the fastest-growing occupations in the nation, with a median annual salary of about $24,000. VGCC began offering a certificate program in the field in daytime and evening classes this Fall Semester.

VGCC will begin the online offering on Nov. 1 to accommodate self-motivated individuals who cannot attend on-campus classes, which are filled and have a waiting list. The first course in Medical Coding – medical terminology – will run through Dec. 17. Registration for the classes will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 26, in Room 7100 of Building 7 on the VGCC main campus in Vance County.

To participate in the online medical coding class, a person needs a computer with Internet access, a valid e-mail address, and know how to operate a computer. Registration fee will be $60, plus the cost of the textbook.

Marianne Durling, who teaches the classroom sections of medical coding at VGCC, will be the online instructor. The college plans to offer other courses online in the medical coding curriculum in Spring Semester 2005, beginning in January.
