VGCC offers Medical Coding courses at South Campus

Vance-Granville Community College will offer courses in the Medical Coding certificate program at the college’s South Campus in Granville County, starting in January 2011. South Campus is located on N.C. 56 between Creedmoor and Butner.

The introductory course, Medical Terminology, will be offered on Monday and Wednesday nights from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Jan. 10 through April 11. This course is the introduction to the language of medicine. Students learn to pronounce, spell and define medical terms related to anatomy, physiology, pathological conditions, diagnostic testing and medical procedures. The cost of the course is $175.

The South Campus will also host a Medical Coding course on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m., April 6 through July 18. This course provides students a foundation in coding and classification systems in a variety of health-care settings. The cost of this course is also $175.

Kathy Lloyd is the instructor for both courses.

Four courses are required to complete the Medical Coding certificate program: Medical Terminology; Medical Coding; Medical Insurance, Billing and Chart Abstracting; and Medical Coding Certification Exam Preparation.

Medical coding is the process of taking written medical records and converting them into a numerical language in order to submit a bill for services or supplies to an insurance company for payment. VGCC’s program provides area residents with the necessary skills and understanding to allow them to seek entry-level coding positions in one of the nation’s fastest-growing occupations.

Students must have a high school diploma or GED to enter the program.

For more information and to register for the course, call South Campus Director Derrick Cameron at (919) 528-4737 or (252) 738-3515.
