VGCC Offers Introduction To Italian Culture, Language

Dr. Christopher Messina is a second-generation Italian who delights in sharing his heritage. He will share this fall in an Introduction to Italian Culture and Language class at Vance-Granville Community College.

The class will be held on Monday evenings from 6 to 8:30 p.m., beginning Sept. 10 on the main campus in Vance County and ending on Dec. 3.

Dr. Messina is a psychologist with a private practice in Raleigh who also is a consultant to several programs in this area. He has studied Italian at North Carolina State University and enjoys sharing knowledge of his heritage with others.

“The class will be fun and entertaining and will not be just grammar and conjugating verbs,” Messina said.

He plans to introduce students to the Italian language with basic grammar, common expressions and vocabulary. But students also will learn about Italian history and culture, such as food. “I’ll even share recipes of some wonderful Italian dishes with the class,” Messina said.

Cost of the 12-week course is $37.50. Class size is limited, and pre-registration is recommended. To register, call the Vance-Granville Continuing Education office at (252) 492-2061, extension 316.
