VGCC Offers Free Seminar To Prepare Effective Board Members For Nonprofits

Many business people serve on the boards of nonprofit organizations, but don’t receive adequate training. Vance-Granville Community College is offering that training, free of charge, in a Feb. 24 seminar.

“How to Be an Effective Board Member” will be presented from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Thursday, Feb. 24, in Room 7107 of Building 7 on the main campus in Vance County.

Attendees will learn why nonprofit boards exist, the 10 basic responsibilities of nonprofit boards, the difference in the roles of boards and staff, and the legal aspects of board service. Tips on fund-raising and leadership will be included.

Denise Ryan of FireStar of Raleigh, will be the instructor. She holds an M.B.A. and has 10 years of nonprofit experience.

Space is limited. Interested persons should pre-register by call the VGCC Small Business Center at (252) 492-2061, ext. 3239 or 3240.
