VGCC Offers 4 Mini-Semester Business Courses – All Online

The opportunities to take classes online with a computer continue to grow at Vance-Granville Community College.

The latest additions to the VGCC online offerings are four business courses that will be offered as mini-semester classes, Feb. 21-May 10.

Mini-semester classes are classes that are held within a semester, but do not last the entire 16 weeks of a semester. Usually they are half that long, but students attend classes twice as long to get the same number of contact hours. Since these four spring mini-semester courses are online, students will be working more at their own pace and will be given 11 weeks to complete them.

Marsha Nelson, VGCC’s Vice President of Instruction and Student Services, said that mini-semester courses are offered so that students will be able to take classes that were filled when they registered. Offering these four business courses online also should make them more attractive to working people, stay-at-home mothers and others who like the convenience of working in their own homes and getting college credit for it.

This is the first time the college has offered all its mini-semester classes online. “Online classes usually fill up almost immediately, and we expect these to be very popular, too,” Nelson said.

The classes being offered are Business Income Tax ( ACC 130 -91), Business Law ( BUS 115 -92), Introduction to Business ( BUS 110 -91) and Professional Development ( BUS 270 -92). College officials said that the Business Income Tax class covers corporate taxes, and is intended for students who have some knowledge of individual income tax. Therefore, it will be available only to students who have completed ACC 129 (Individual Income Tax) or who are enrolled in that class now.

For more information or to apply for the online mini-semester classes, persons may visit Student Services on VGCC’s main campus or call (252) 492-2061.
