VGCC Invites Public to Reading By Noted Poet, Author, Playwright

Award-winning poet, author and playwright Joseph Bathanti will read from his works at Vance-Granville Community College on Thursday, April 19.

The college invites the public to attend the reading at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Building 2 on the main campus in Vance County.

A Pittsburgh, Pa., native, Bathanti came to North Carolina in 1976 and has taught at Central Piedmont, Anson and McDowell Technical community colleges and at Davidson, Wingate and Saint Andrews colleges. Currently, he teaches English and is the writer-in-residence at Mitchell Community College in Statesville.

He won the Carolina Novel Award for 2000-2001 for his first novel, “East Liberty,” which is scheduled to be published this fall. He is the author of four books of poetry: “Communion Partners,” “Anson County,” “The Feast of All Saints” and “This Metal,” which was nominated for the National Book Award and which won the 1997 Oscar Arnold Young Award for the best book of poems by a North Carolina author.

Bathanti’s play, “Afomo,” won the Wachovia Playwrights Prize and The Playwrights Fund of North Carolina prize. His poetry, fiction and nonfiction have also appeared in numerous publications throughout the United States.
