VGCC Human Resources Development Is All About Making a New Start

Some of the most important training offered at Vance-Granville Community College comes under the heading of Human Resources Development (HRD).

HRD Career Planning and Job Preparation classes are currently under way on the main campus in Vance County and at the Franklin County Campus at Louisburg. Classes will begin on Nov. 7 at the South Campus in Granville County and at the Warren County Campus in Warrenton.

Dorothy Williams, HRD coordinator at Vance-Granville, said that HRD classes are designed to help the unemployed and the underemployed with career planning. “We’re helping people get a new start and change their lives,” Williams said.

The HRD classes teach people how to improve their job seeking and job keeping skills. Students learn résumé writing and how to fill out job applications online. They get tips on effective job interviewing.

Classes help students decide on careers they would like to pursue. They are assessed for the level of academic skills they have and are referred to further education or training in their fields of interest. They also may receive referrals to job placement programs and find employment upon completion of the program.

“Many of our students need to improve their basic academic skills before entering curriculum programs,” Williams said. “Many of them have experienced little or no success in their lives, and we try to help them build self confidence and get the feeling they can achieve.”

Human Resource Development classes will begin Nov. 7 at South Campus and run through Dec. 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Classes will also begin Nov. 7 at the Warren County Campus and be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday-Thursday.

Franklin County Campus HRD classes are being held Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will conclude on Dec. 15. These are open entry classes that a person may still enter and depart when they have the assistance they need.
