Vance-Granville Community College honored 18 of its highest-ranking students as College Transfer Scholars for 2005 during its spring convocation April 29 in the Civic Center.

Begun in 1988 at VGCC, the scholarship program is the school’s only award that is determined by a vote of the faculty. To quality, candidates must have a minimum 3.0 average, must have completed 22 hours in the College Transfer program, and must be nominated by two program faculty members. The entire College Transfer faculty approves all selectees. This year’s recipients were chosen from a field of more than 600 students.

Dr. John J. Beck, dean of the General College and College Transfer Program, presided over the convocation ceremony and made presentations to: Andrew L. Frier, Kathryn Ann Terry, Timothy J. TenBroek, Bertha Mae Brandon and Jesse A. Reaves of Henderson, Steven Andrew Darnell of Louisburg, Brandy Nicole Barnett of Franklinton, Steven M. Clayton and Christopher R. Bloom of Youngsville, Karen Marie Guerrette and Geovani Ramirez of Warrenton, Kyra Christina Ferruccio of Norlina, Beverly Loving Byrd of Creedmoor, Vincent E. MacIsaac, Carol H. Perunko and Sidney R. Thomerson of Oxford, Michael A. Montgomery of Wake Forest and Tyler A. Stull of Spring Hope.

Dr. Beck also named Jennifer Johnson, program head and instructor for the Early Childhood Associate program, as recipient of the Chairman’s Award for excellence in instruction. He also recognized last year’s recipient, Betsy Henderson, Speech/Theater Arts instructor, who has recently been selected as Vance-Granville Community College’s Instructor of the Year for 2005.

Dr. Beck announced at the convocation that Denise McDaniels, an Early Childhood Associate student from Oxford, has been selected as the college’s Leadership Institute winner. McDaniels will participate in the Leadership Institute this summer at Peace College in Raleigh.
