VGCC falls to Louisburg, 100-90, in spirited Vanguard Night contest

A large home crowd cheered on the Vance-Granville Community College Vanguards at Aycock Recreation Center in Henderson on Dec. 3, and were treated to an exciting night of basketball action. Although the home team (who came into the contest with a 1-7 record) eventually lost to the undefeated, nationally-ranked Louisburg College Hurricanes by a score of 100-90, that outcome was in doubt for much of the evening.

The Vanguards led for almost the entire first 10 minutes of the game, seeming to catch the visitors off-guard and delighting the fans, who filled the stands for what VGCC called “Vanguard Night,” complete with a DJ, prize drawings and a halftime show by the step team from a Granville County youth organization, “Un-Rappin’ the Gift.”

The Hurricanes took the lead midway through the first half and were up 50-42 at the break. In the hard-fought second half, the Vanguards could never retake the lead, although they came within five points at times. In the closing minute, a string of fouls padded Louisburg’s lead to ten.

Freshman Reatt M. Foster of Hartsville, S.C., was the Vanguards’ top scorer, with 22 points off the bench. Tyrek Beverly of Oxford, another freshman, added 20 points of his own. Khadier Fulcher of Stem, a sophomore, had a big night as well, with 18 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Alcyone Moore of Charlotte led VGCC in rebounds (10) and in steals (four). Sophomore Jarrett Ballard of Henderson was the team’s leader in assists, with seven.

In team statistics, the conference rivals matched up well. Louisburg shot 48% from the floor while VGCC shot 48.3%. The Vanguards had a better percentage from behind the three-point line (30.8%, compared to 22.6% for the Hurricanes), and from the foul line (63.8%, compared to 50%). Louisburg recorded 42 rebounds, and VGCC, 41. The Hurricanes made 19 assists while the Vanguards made 18, and the visitors suffered 17 turnovers over the home team’s 14.
