VGCC Faculty, Staff Raise $14,532 For Scholarships

Another great year!

For the third year in a row, the faculty and the staff of Vance-Granville Community College have raised more than $14,000 for the student scholarship program! This year’s total is $14,532. The co-chairs of this year’s drive, Jo Anna Jones, George Henderson and Larraine Abbott, issued a statement on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 7, saying “Thank you so much for your generosity and your desire to help our students!”

Congratulations are in order for the winners of the competitions, as announced during a brief ceremony in the lobby of Building 1 on Thursday afternoon:

The HIGHEST-PERCENTAGE TEAMS, winner of gift certificates to the Cracker Barrel, were: FIRST PLACE: STUDENT SERVICES II: Kathy Ktul, captain, Brenda Beck, Harry Bryan, Michael Davis, Claudette Dickerson, Lori Forsythe, Carol Slaughter, and Theodora Smith; SECOND PLACE: COLLEGE SERVICES I: Randy Owen, captain, Gina Brewer, Garland Elliott, Diane Finch, Melonie Hight, Kim Jackson, Tony Pendergrass, and Curtis Tyndall.

The MOST-MONEY-CONTRIBUTED TEAMS, also winners of gift certificates to the Cracker Barrel, were FIRST PLACE: COLLEGE TRANSFER III: Laura Pittard, captain, Valetter Alston-Thompson, Button Brady, Mike Huffaker, Dana Jenkins, Steve McGrady, Philip Mondou, Dan Settles, Carl Shafer, and Rudolph Turner; SECOND PLACE: COLLEGE SERVICES I: Randy Owen, captain, Gina Brewer, Garland Elliott, Diane Finch, Melonie Hight, Kim Jackson, Tony Pendergrass, and Curtis Tyndall.

JACKIE SUTTON, off-campus cosmetology coordinator, won the drawing for $250 in cash. The co-chairs also thanked the “early birds” for their efforts to get in first: Administration, Business Office I, Business Office II, College Services I, Counseling Services, LRC, Student Services I and Student Services II. Each of the members of these teams got an extra ticket in the drawing for $250.

100% PARTICIPATION: MARTHA BERGERON’s name was drawn in the drawing for gifts for those teams with 100% participation, and her team (College Transfer I) members won their choice of special gifts from VGCC. Sixteen teams were 100% this year.

A good number of the staff and faculty chose to target your contributions to already existing scholarships. Of those contributions, more than $5,000 was designated for existing scholarships honoring Pat Graham and Frank Madigan and in memory of Vesta Manning and Julius Frazier, as well as a proposed scholarship in memory of Tom Long.

“On behalf of the students, we say thank you so very much!” the co-chairs said. “Thanks also to team captains, and thanks to Ernestine Peace in the Business Office for keeping up with all of the team totals.”

President Robert A. Miller said, “Thus far, the faculty and staff of VGCC have contributed more than $156,000 to the Endowment Fund. Thanks to all of you who made this year’s drive such a big success!”
