VGCC Computer classes scheduled at Main Campus in January

Vance-Granville Community College is currently registering students for several popular, short-term computer courses starting in Jan. 2013 on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County.

Two are offered during the evening. First, the “Beginner’s Guide to Computers & Internet,” is scheduled for Tuesdays from 6 until 10 p.m., Jan. 8 through Feb. 12. Novice students will get an introduction to the common components and many uses of personal computers through the Windows environment. Students will also learn effective ways to make the most of the Internet in their daily lives through the use of common search tools.

Another course, “QuickBooks for Small Business,” which introduces students to the powerful accounting software, will be held on Wednesday evenings from 5:30-9:30 p.m., Jan. 16 through Feb. 20. Students will learn the types of information that businesses need to track and how to enter and track that information in QuickBooks. In addition, students will learn to invoice customers, record payments for customers, pay bills to outside vendors, manage inventory and analyze financial data.

A daytime course on the Microsoft Word and Excel 2010 software is scheduled for Thursdays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., Jan. 10 through Feb. 14. Students will familiarize themselves with the popular word processing and spreadsheet programs, which were significantly updated in their most recent versions. Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel are two of the most widely used software programs in the workforce today. Knowledge of these programs is frequently listed as a requirement in job postings.

Finally, “Digital Photography & Photo Editing” is scheduled for Mondays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., Jan. 14 through Feb. 25. Students will learn the basics of operating digital cameras and receive training in digital photography software, printing, internet and e-mail use. Course topics also include storage, file management, photo editing, digital imagery, formal and informal photography and the use of light.

For each course, the registration fee is $65, with other college fees totaling $7. Registration fees are waived for N.C. resident seniors, ages 65 and above, for one course per semester.
