VGCC Career Center holds open house

The Career Center at Vance-Granville Community College held its first-ever open house on Oct. 14 to inform all students, faculty and staff about the free resources that the center makes available. The Career Center , located in Building 8 on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County, serves alumni in addition to current students, and is also open to area businesses who are seeking employees. VGCC Career Services director Linda Fletcher told visitors to the open house about how her department helps students and alumni with career planning, job searches, resumes and interview preparation.

Pictured above from left, Fletcher talks with the first student to visit the open house, Roderick Wilson of Henderson. Wilson is enrolled in the VGCC College Transfer program and plans to transfer next year to UNC-Greensboro. He was particularly interested in finding out about resources that could help him as he interviews for internships and later for employment opportunities. He and the rest of the first 75 students at the open house received a free copy of “The Job Hunting Handbook” by Harry Dahlstrom. The Career Center provides a variety of print and electronic resources, as well as career counseling. The Career Services department , of which the center is a part, recently began using a new electronic job posting system, College Central Network , which helps students and alumni find employment both locally and nationally. The department also administers Cooperative Education, or “Co-op” , an academic program that combines classroom studies with on-the-job, career-related work experience. “Good career planning leads to greater job satisfaction and a more productive workforce,” Fletcher said. “We encourage all of our students to invest time in career planning to achieve academic and career success.” For more information, call Linda Fletcher at (252) 738-3466.
