VGCC Brings Medical Coding program to Franklin Campus

Vance-Granville Community College will make the Medical Coding certificate program available at its Franklin County Campus for the first time this fall.  Medical Coding is a one-year Community & Economic Development program that is currently being offered on two other VGCC campuses.  It includes training in coding, billing, insurance, medical terminology, and preparing for a certification test.

Medical coding is the process of taking written medical records and converting them into a numerical language in order to submit a bill for services or supplies to an insurance company for payment.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “The medical coding field is expected to grow much faster than the average occupation through the next decade.”  VGCC’s program provides area residents with the necessary skills and understanding to allow them to seek entry-level coding positions in one of the nation’s fastest-growing occupations.

Starting in October, both daytime and evening classes will be scheduled on the Franklin campus. Day classes will last from 9 a.m. to noon, while evening classes will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Amy Minor will be the instructor for both classes.

Although classes do not begin until October, students must attend an orientation session in September in order to take the course.  Orientation and registration for the night class will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m.  Orientation and registration for the day class will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 10 a.m.   Students will be given a complete program overview and instructions during the orientation and registration process.

Students must have a high school diploma or GED to enter the program.
