VGCC Board Tours Sim Center at Hospital

The Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees held their bimonthly meeting on Monday, July 23. The meeting, which is normally held at the Henderson campus of VGCC, was held on this occasion at Maria Parham Medical Center, to present the college’s new state-of-the-art simulation center located at the hospital to Board members.Board members dined at the hospital and toured the simulation center housed in the 3,000-square -foot space formerly utilized as the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. The simulation center replicates an entire hospital unit with life-like manikins and virtual IV trainers. The center provides a realistic and safe environment for students to simulate medical emergencies with manikins that emulate human functions such as breathing, heart rhythms and even pre-recorded speech.Dr. Angela Ballentine, vice president of instruction, gave an overview of the Associate Degree Nursing, Medical Assisting, Pharmacy Technology, Practical Nursing and Radiography programs at the college.In addition to the tour and presentations on health programs at the college, the Board also conducted its regular business meeting at this time.The Board approved revisions to the 2006-07 budget resolution. The combined amended budget for 2006/07 is $39,077,417. This reflected a one percent reversion to the state of $165,179. The Board also approved revisions to student fees. These fees deviated only slightly from those of the previous year.Also during the meeting, District Court Judge Randolph Baskerville administered the oath of office to J. David Brooks of Oxford. Brooks, a real estate appraiser, was reappointed by the Granville County Commissioners to the Board of Trustees. His four-year term will end June 30, 2011.In other business, President Randy Parker reported that the audit report from the N.C. Community College System found no audit exceptions for the classes and programs reviewed. N.C. Community College System Executive Vice President Fred Williams, in a letter to the college, commended Parker and his staff for their excellent record-keeping procedures.Parker also announced that N.C. Senator Doug Berger will be the speaker at the college’s summer graduation on August 8.The next regular meeting of the Board will be held on Monday, September 17 in the board room on main campus. The Board will also hold a planning retreat on August 20 at the college.
