VGCC Board Meets, Accepts Check from Annual VGCC Endowment Fund Faculty and Staff Drive
The Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees held its bimonthly meeting on Monday, Nov. 17 at the college’s Henderson campus.
At that meeting, Carl Hann and Jason Snelling, co-chairs of the annual VGCC Endowment Fund Faculty and Staff Drive, presented a check to the Board for $26,979. The money was donated by VGCC faculty and staff to fund scholarships for VGCC students. Donald C. Seifert, chairman of the VGCC Board of Trustees , thanked the faculty and staff for their generosity and continuing support of the Endowment Program. Jo Anna Finch Jones , Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Director of the Endowment Program, also expressed her gratitude to the faculty and staff and thanked Linda Fletcher , who also co-chaired the fund drive but was unable to attend the meeting. In 2007-2008, 430 students received scholarships through the college’s Endowment Fund, totaling $210,471.
Also during the meeting, Building Committee Chair John M. Foster reported that the Pearce Brinkley Cease + Lee (PBC&L) architectural firm in Raleigh had been selected for the planning for the proposed Allied Health and Science Building on Main Campus. This project was selected by the Board as one of the top three priorities in the college’s Facilities Master Plan, which outlines the college’s space needs and possibilities for expansion over the next ten years. The Facilities Master Plan was created so the college would have the initial plans for expansion in place should building funds become available in the future. Other expansion priorities for the future will be the renovation of Buildings 5 and 6 on Main Campus; construction of a Corporate Education Center at a location to be determined; and renovations of Building 1 and construction of a new classroom/ library building, both at the Franklin County Campus .
The Board approved the 2009-2010 Cooperative Program Agreements with Boards of Education in Vance, Granville, Franklin and Warren counties to continue to provide VGCC curriculum courses to qualified high school students that can be used as high school elective credit, as well as college credit at the community college level. Also known as the Huskins Bill cooperative program, the purpose of these classes is to make college-level academic, technical and vocational courses available to high school students and to effect an uninterrupted flow in education from the high school into the community college or a four-year college or university.
In other business, President Randy Parker presented the college’s annual report to the Board. Parker noted that from July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008, the college taught 4,256 classes in 148 locations serving 20,744 students. Parker also noted the large positive economic impact that the college has on the community. With a budget of $33,681,715 during the 2007 – 2008 period, it employed 933 individuals and paid $33,681,715 in salaries.
The next regular meeting of the Board will be held on Monday, January 26 at 7 p.m. in the board room on Main Campus.
