VGCC Awards Record 290 Grants At Annual Scholarship Ceremony

Vance-Granville Community College awarded scholarships to 290 full-time students at Scholarship Day ceremonies Sept. 22 at the college.

President Randy Parker told a crowded Civic Center audience that 10 Presidential Scholar Awards worth $1,200 each were awarded, 74 students received Presidential Merit Awards worth $1,000, 197 got Academic Achievement Awards worth $500, and nine non-endowed grants were awarded. In addition, 201 part-time students have been awarded $300 each this year. The total scholarships awarded for the 2004-2005 school year amount to $250,000, a record monetary amount, Parker announced.

The endowed scholarships awarded this year are funded by interest on an Endowment Fund and Scholarship Program that surpassed $5 million in assets earlier this year. Parker said this is one of the largest endowment funds among the state’s 58 community colleges, and he thanked the individuals, businesses, industries, civic groups, churches and other organizations that have established scholarships to assist deserving Vance-Granville students in their academic endeavors.
