VGCC Adds New Quilting Class For Beginners To Fall Schedule

Vance-Granville Community College is adding a new quilting class for beginners this fall to further accommodate the demand for instruction in this growing hobby.

Peggy Stocks, an award-winning quilter who has taught the craft at VGCC since 1995, will teach the new class on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30, beginning Sept. 9. This will be one of five quilting classes offered at the college, all in Room 5201 on the main campus in Vance County.

“Beginners will make a sampler quilt in which every block is different,” Stocks said. “After making a sampler, people will be able to make almost anything in the quilting world.”

Stocks teaches hand piecing and hand quilting. She said that no experience is needed to learn to quilt, and anyone who wants to learn can. “I had one woman student who had only patched jeans and sewed on buttons for her five sons,” she said. “She has now made many excellent quilts.”

“People find comfort in quilting and an excellent outlet for their creativity,” said Stocks. “Fabrics are prettier than ever, and the quality is better than ever.”

In addition to Stocks’ new beginner class, Vance-Granville is continuing another class for newcomers to quilting on Tuesday evenings, also from 6:30 to 9:30, beginning Sept. 14. Velvet Boyd, a former student of Stocks, teaches this class.

Stocks also teaches three classes for more advanced quilters. Two of these are in the morning, from 9 to noon, on Wednesdays and Thursdays, beginning Sept. 8 and 9, and another runs from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, beginning Sept. 8.

Registration fee for all these quilting classes, which run to the first week of December, is $45 each. For more information and to pre-register for any of the classes, interested persons may call the VGCC Continuing Education office at (252) 738-3316.
